2020 TargetGlobal elimination
Lost productivity due to trachoma is estimated to be around $3 billion per year.
Trachoma is an infection of the eye cause by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, and affects roughly 40 million people across 57 countries.
Strategy for Elimination / Eradication / Control
Trachoma elimination is based on the “SAFE” strategy (Surgery, Antibiotic treatment, Face washing and Environmental control). The antibiotic azithromycin is mainly used for preventative chemotherapy in this approach.
Global elimination of trachoma is defined as fewer than 1 case per 1000 people, and a 5% or lower prevalence in children aged 1-9.
