Access to Medicine Index

Sector in which the organization works:

Short description of the organization and its work to control and eliminate NTDs

The Access to Medicine Foundation publishes the Access to Medicine Index, a two-yearly ranking of the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies based on their policies and practices to improve access to medicine in low-and-middle-income countries. The Index publicly recognises good practice in the area of access to medicine, and provides a transparent means by which all stakeholders can assess company performances. The Index measures company activities that address diseases with the greatest global burden and with the greatest need in terms of access to medicine. This includes all 17 WHO-classified NTDs. The Access to Medicine Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation. It develops and refines Index methodology following consultation with multiple stakeholders, including the World Health Organization, NGOs, governments, universities, and institutional investors.

The Access to Medicine Index measures pharmaceutical companies’ policies and practices in countries where access to medicine is most needed based on levels of income, development and socio-economic equality.
