Short description of the organization and its work to control and eliminate NTDs
The mission of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GAELF) is to bring together a diverse group of public-private health partners to support the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by mobilizing political, financial and technical resources to ensure success:
- Political to increase publicity at an international level and to raise public awareness of LF as a debilitating and disabling poverty-related disease that is eliminable and engage the media by telling the story of the successes and challenges of LF programmes.
- Financial to advocate Ministries of Health to recognise the benefits of treating lymphatic filariasis (and other neglected tropical diseases) and include a line in their national health budget to support national programmes; to assist countries in accessing debt relief and other multilateral funds and explore linkages with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; to engage in advocacy activities with potential and current donors.
- Technical by a network of academic/research institutes and laboratories, particularly in endemic countries, to support LF (and other neglected tropical diseases) country and regional programmes; expertise in monitoring and evaluation for country programmes; research priorities and strategies promotion; providing opportunities for country staff to further their training and education in a mutually beneficial fashion; measuring programme costs and cost-effectiveness and dissemination of this information in a clear way to help with programme planning and resource mobilisation and by measuring the impact on health systems of LF elimination programmes.
