Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a mixture of treatable and preventable diseases that continue to affect over one billion of the world’s poorest, most marginalized and most remote communities. They are a consequence and cause of poverty as they thrive where access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare is limited. Their impact on individuals and communities can be devastating. Many of them cause severe disfigurement and disabilities. They impact on life expectancy, education and economic opportunities of affected individuals and the communities they live in.

In 2014, Sightsavers was awarded a grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to host the support centre for Uniting to Combat NTDs, a coalition of invested and dedicated organisations working to support the achievement of the World Health Organization’s 2020 goals in respect to 10 NTDs.

In October 2016, building on from the first 18 months of the support centre, an additional grant was provided to build the advocacy capacity of the support centre towards the delivery of key advocacy priorities which are to increase:

• bilateral donors who are supporting implementation of NTD programmes
• countries who are investing their domestic resources to NTD programmes in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and universal health coverage.

Director of Advocacy role

Building on from the success of the project to date, we are now recruiting a Director of Advocacy who will play a key role in achieving the key advocacy aims.

The Director of Advocacy will be the technical lead on advocacy, providing overall direction on advocacy tactics and approaches. The Director will work very closely with the Director of the Support Centre to engage in strategic planning to deliver on the primary outcomes of the project. The Director will link directly with national level NTD coalitions to design, implement and evaluate strategies that effectively address the needs associated with maintaining and growing NTD resources. The Director will be responsible for supervising the project related activities of the Head of US Advocacy and the Policy Advisor.
