On World NTD Day 2025, DevEX published an op-ed by Dr. Isatou Touray, Executive Director of Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases and former Vice President of The Gambia, highlighting the urgent need for accelerated action against NTDs as the world reaches the halfway mark to the 2030 WHO NTD Roadmap goals. Drawing on her unique dual perspective, Dr. Touray shares how communities in The Gambia and beyond have overcome significant barriers to eliminate diseases like trachoma and schistosomiasis. The piece underscores the theme of “Unite, Act, Eliminate” for World NTD Day 2025, emphasizing that collaboration, consistent funding, and strong political commitment are crucial for success.

Dr. Touray references milestones such as the Kigali Declaration, the Common Africa Position on NTDs, and the rapid increase in national eliminations, highlighting how unity and investment drive transformative results. She also addresses persistent challenges, including climate change, conflict, and resource gaps, arguing that with adequate financing, these can be surmounted. Ultimately, this op-ed serves as a rallying cry for governments, donors, and the private sector to provide the necessary resources and seize this critical five-year window to drastically reduce NTDs worldwide. By doing so, Dr. Touray envisions a future where vulnerable communities are empowered, equitable, and free from preventable diseases. Read the article.
