Ethiopia – 14 February 2025
Today, Uniting to Combat NTDs met with AUDA-NEPAD at the Artificial Intelligence, Science, Technology & Innovation Day during the African Union (AU) Summit in Ethiopia to strengthen their collaboration in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
NTDs affect over 600 million people in Africa, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable communities. Despite being preventable and treatable, these diseases continue to thrive due to limited access to healthcare, poor sanitation, and lack of resources. Addressing NTDs is not only a health priority but also a key driver for social and economic development across the continent.
At the event, leaders emphasized the importance of leveraging AI and data-driven decision-making. By using technology to identify high-burden areas, track progress, and improve interventions, Africa can bridge the demographic divide and accelerate progress towards the 2030 NTD roadmap goals.
“Innovation and collaboration are critical to eliminating NTDs,” said Dr Isatou Touray, Executive Director at Uniting to Combat NTDs. “By partnering with AUDA-NEPAD and harnessing science and technology, we can make real strides in ensuring that no one in Africa suffers from these preventable diseases.”

AUDA-NEPAD, the African Union’s development agency, is committed to using science, technology, and innovation to tackle pressing public health challenges. Today’s discussions reinforced the shared vision of integrating AI, research, and smart health policies to combat NTDs and improve health outcomes across Africa.
As the world moves towards a more data-driven approach to global health, Uniting to Combat NTDs and AUDA-NEPAD will continue working together to bring innovative solutions to the forefront, ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against NTDs.
