Key achievements in 2024 included:
- Secured transformative funding opportunities through strategic advocacy: Uniting played a central role in advocating for the inclusion of disease elimination in the World Bank’s IDA21 replenishment. This work laid the foundation for a potential new global funding track for NTDs and led to increased engagement with finance ministries across key endemic countries. Additionally, through a new partnership with AUDA-NEPAD, Uniting co-developed a groundbreaking $22.5 million proposal to the African Development Bank, with the potential to scale to $40 million across seven countries.
- Catalysed increased domestic financing for NTDs: In Nigeria, Uniting supported a high-level meeting with all 36 state Health Commissioners, resulting in a joint communiqué committing to dedicated budget lines for NTDs at both national and state levels. Meanwhile, countries including Ethiopia, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tanzania collectively doubled their financial commitments over the past two years, reinforcing growing national leadership in sustaining NTD programmes.
- Elevated the global profile of NTDs in major policy arenas: Through targeted engagement, Uniting ensured NTDs were included in six high-level communiqués from CHOGM, the G7, the G20, and the African Union Heads of State. This marks a major win in keeping NTDs visible on the global development agenda despite rising competition for attention and funding.
- Celebrated historic elimination milestones: Uniting championed global recognition of seven countries that eliminated at least one NTD in 2024. With 54 countries now having achieved elimination of at least one disease, the world is officially over halfway to the 2030 WHO Roadmap goal—a testament to sustained momentum and coordinated action.
- Showcased the value of pharmaceutical donations through powerful storytelling: Uniting partnered with GSK and the Zanzibar Ministry of Health to commemorate the 12 billionth donated treatment of albendazole. This high-profile event celebrated the impact of drug donations and reinforced the case for continued public-private collaboration.
- Mobilised new donor commitments: Uniting secured a $5 million multi-year contribution from the Kuwait Fund to WHO ESPEN and a real-terms increase in NTD funding from the UK government. These commitments reflect Uniting’s ability to influence donors through consistent, evidence-driven advocacy.
- Strengthened community and partner engagement: Through coordinated communications campaigns, storytelling from lived experience, and the empowerment of youth and community advocates, Uniting helped ensure that voices from the frontlines remained at the heart of global advocacy efforts.
